Description (About the Facility)

The Sheikh Hamad Prosthetics Hospital is the only hospital specializing in prosthetics and rehabilitation in the Gaza Strip. It was established in 2016 following directives from Qatari prince Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to the Qatar Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza and the Qatar Fund for Development. The hospital became operational in 2019 and was considered a significant addition to the health sector in Gaza, providing quality services that did not exist before[1].

The hospital, which has a clinical capacity of 100 beds, consists of five floors of 2,700 square meters each built on an area of 12,000 square meters[2]. In addition, it has a service building with an area of 350 square meters, an outdoor garden with an area of 6,665 square meters[3].

Effect of siege (2007 - 2023)

In July 2023: The Sheikh Hamad Prosthetics Hospital opened two specialized units for the treatment of diabetic foot and chronic pain patients, the first of their kind in the Gaza Strip[4]. In the same month, the hospital received a Qatari medical delegation to perform 50 new cochlear implants, another 22 cochlear devices were provided with funding from the Qatari Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, and the efficiency of the working staff was developed through specialized training[5].

On October 15, 2023: The Sheikh Hamad Prosthetics Hospital's management announced that the hospital had suffered significant damage as a result of heavy Israeli shelling of its surroundings[6].

On November 6, 2023: Occupation forces targeted the hospital and the al-Karama neighborhood with intensive shelling, rendering the hospital out of service. The State of Qatar denounced the Israeli claim that there were tunnels beneath the hospital. A video showed the scale and nature of the destruction caused to the hospital as a result of the shelling and invasion by the occupation army[7].

On February 6, 2024: In a report prepared by Arab TV, the occupation's narrative claiming the existence of a resistance tunnel near Sheikh Hamad Hospital was refuted[8].

February 7, 2024: Al-Jazeera’s English-language channel published a video clip showing the extent of the destruction left by the occupation army inside the hospital after its withdrawal[9].
