Description (About the Facility)

Jaffa Medical Hospital is a non-governmental hospital in Dayr al-Balah's Bishara neighborhood, established in 2002. The hospital is the main medical center of four medical centers affiliated with the Salah Islamic Society, which was founded in 1978 and played a prominent role in the First Intifada and the Al-Aqsa Intifada[1][2].

The hospital began as a small health center and later evolved into a hospital with a clinical capacity of 5 beds, serving 250,000 residents in the Dayr al-Balah Governorate. It offers medical and pharmaceutical services, medical detection and medicine at nominal prices or free of charge, according to individual needs[3].

Funding Details
The Salah Islamic Society operates within the framework of charitable organizations in cooperation with the Islamic Society. The association implements charitable investment projects whose profits are used to provide health, educational, and developmental services. The association faces financial challenges, mainly the difficulty of attracting funding from abroad and obstacles in transferring funds through banks as a result of the blockade of the Gaza Strip since 2007[1].

In 2008: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ Fund for International Development provided emergency aid, including food, medical supplies, and emergency medical equipment[5].

In 2010: The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development financed the purchase of CT radiography equipment[6].
Effect of siege (2007 - 2023)

In 2006: A gastrointestinal endoscopy unit was opened at the Jaffa Medical Hospital[7].

In 2008: A new department of surgery and obstetrics was opened[8].

In December 2009: The hospital administration developed a comprehensive plan to enhance medical skills by sending a number of doctors abroad for specialized training, in addition to hosting doctors from Egypt to provide training courses. However, financial challenges and constraints caused by the Israeli blockade affected the full implementation of this plan. Also in 2009, the hospital prepared an emergency action plan in case the occupation launched an aggression against the Gaza Strip[4].

In 2022: The Dar Al-Yateem Society established a desalination plant at the hospital, in addition to constructing outdoor water taps and sinks for the benefit of passersby and local residents[9].

narrative during this war

On December 8, 2023: Occupation forces bombed the vicinity of the Jaffa Medical Hospital, including directly targeting the Jaffa Mosque located next to it, putting the hospital out of service. The operating, emergency, and surgical departments were severely affected by the attack. At the time, the hospital was one of 12 hospitals in the southern Gazan Strip that continue to function partially[10].

On December 24, 2023: The Association of Palestinian Doctors in Europe, Turkey branch, in cooperation with Jaffa Medical Hospital, establish a new medical point in the Al-Wusta area inside the Khadija Shelter School[11].

On June 26, 2024: The Hospital’s staff posted on Facebook the work schedule of the hospital's clinics[12].
