Head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department at al-Shifa Medical Complex and al-Mahdi maternity hospital, a private hospital he established with his siblings and cousins who are also gynaecology and obstetrics doctors.
"You and your arabness have failed us" – these were the last words of Dr. Basel Mahdi on a post on his Facebook profile hours before his martyrdom. These words came after pleas for days to evacuate him and his family after they were besieged in al-Mahdi maternity hospital before it was bombed and most people in it were killed, among them Dr. Basel and his entire family.
