Description (About the Facility)

The Muhammad al-Durrah Hospital is one of the specialized pediatric hospitals in the Gaza Strip and is administered by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The hospital opened in 2000 during the Al-Aqsa Intifada, and was named after the martyr Muhammad al-Durrah, who was assassinated by the occupation forces in the same year. It has a clinical capacity of 100 beds[1], and provides services to residents of the eastern areas of Gaza City, including the Tuffah, al-Zaytun, and Shuja’iyah neighborhoods.

Development

In 2008: The Ministry of Health opened Muhammad al-Durrah Hospital’s intensive care department, with a donation from the Mabarrah Ghanayem Charitable Society from Kuwait[2].

In May 2014: The hospital was recognized by the Palestinian Ministry of Health as a Level 1 Patient Safety Standard Friendly Hospital [3], the first hospital in the Gaza Strip to receive this designation. At the time, the hospital collaborated with the World Health Organization on patient safety standards[4].

Effect of siege (2007 - 2023)

In the 2008-2009 aggression: Occupation forces shelled the hospital with artillery, destroying the front entrance, the western side of the hospital building, the nursing station, and its second floor[5][6].

During the 2014 aggression: The hospital was destroyed by shelling and targeting by occupation forces, which led to the cessation of services[7].

In February 2023: A lack of fuel led to the curtailment of 60% of the hospital's services[8].

In December 2020: Occupation forces targeted the vicinity of Al-Durrah Children's Hospital, leading to the injury of dozens of sick children and their families[9].

April 2023: Occupation forces fired at least six missiles at the perimeter of Al Durrah Children's Hospital, causing damage[10].

narrative during this war

On October 13, 2023: The Ministry of Health evacuated the Muhammad al-Durrah Hospital after it was hit with white phosphorus bombs, later declaring it out of service as a result of the attack [11].

On October 24, 2023: Occupation forces bombed the home of the hospital’s director Kamal Khattab, killing his wife and two daughters[12].

On September 1, 2024: Occupation warplanes targeted a residential compound in the vicinity of the hospital[13].
