While he was working in the Indonesian Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip in November 2023, a video circulated documenting the moment he was injured and became soaked in blood while conducting a surgical operation in an Israeli airstrike targeting the hospital. He was operated on in the darkness due to a power outage, before Israeli forces raided the hospital and forced those in it to evacuate.

In December 2023, Dr. Adnan al-Bursh was abducted and transferred to Israeli prisoners. According to prisoner rights' organizations, he was subjected to severe torture, leading to his death.

Dr. Muneer was with Dr. al-Bursh during his arrest and testified: "The Israeli army were screaming at the top of their lungs in front of the hospital: if you do not come down, we will destroy the hospital on top of your head." He continued: "Al-Bursh was the only doctor who was kept in interrogation as long as he was, which points to that he was being tortured the entire time. He was specifically targeted even among other doctors, since they [the Israeli Army] had threatened him several times – he was wanted specifically/."

Al-Bursh was killed while imprisoned at the Ofer Prison on April 19, 2024. He was subjected to severe torture and his body remains held by Israel.
