Like many hospitals in the Gaza Strip, it was established as a small hospital to cope with the repeated incursions of the occupation forces into the governorates, the separation of some governorates from others, and the difficulty of transportation and referrals. Therefore, it was established based on a contingency plan to ensure the reception and treatment of the wounded in all governorates.
The Kamal Adwan Hospital is the most centralized hospital in the North Gaza governorate, serving more than 400,000 people in multiple departments, including pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and nursery. According to a Ministry of Interior and National Security report from September 2023, the Kamal Adwan Hospital received a total of 10,520 patients, the laboratory department conducted 18,772 laboratory tests for 4,233 cases, and the radiology department provided 1,150 radiology services to 1,092 cases. The report also showed that the physiotherapy department provided 1,206 medical sessions to 702 patients, the pharmacy department dispensed 2,092 prescriptions, and the ambulance department conducted 264 ambulance services. The report indicated that the surgical hospital performed 208 surgeries, and the number of deliveries at the complex reached 369 cases[2].
The hospital has three main buildings, the old departments building, the new building, and the side buildings. The old departments building consists of two floors of an estimated 731 square meters per floor. The ground floor contains multiple departments, such as the men's internal medicine department, laboratory, and radiology. The radiology department has a basic x-ray machine and an ultrasound machine, while the upper floor contains the operating department, the women’s department, and the men's surgery department. The new building consists of three floors, the ground floor includes the general reception and outpatient clinics (neurology clinic, diabetes clinic, heart clinic, liver clinic, and chest clinic), the first floor contains an expansion section and offices for doctors and public relations, and the second floor contains the intensive care department and the pediatric department. The side buildings have a kitchen, engineering and maintenance areas, medical archives, administration offices, and the pharmacy.
Development:
In 2016: The Military Medical Services Command provided equipment in the pediatric nursery and expanded the obstetrics and gynecology hospital to increase capacity for civilian insurance cases. In addition, a new department was opened in the pediatric hospital[3].
In 2017: The hospital’s management upgraded the pediatric hospital, which included the re-equipping of the pediatric specialty hospital. The administration also improved and expanded the reception and emergency department by increasing the number of reception beds, increasing the number of medical examination rooms, and equipping a special room to follow up on critical cases. The department also organized several scientific and medical courses and lectures to develop the efficiency of the medical staff[4].
In 2023: The hospital’s reception departments were opened after they were renovated and rehabilitated, with funding from the Rahma Worldwide Foundation. The same organization had previously upgraded the intensive care department[5].
