Omar Farwanah worked as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University in Gaza and helped establish the "Public Service" and "Friends of the Patient" hospitals in Gaza, after gaining his bachelor's degree in medicine from Cairo University and PhD from Leeds University, a prominent university in the United Kingdom. He trained at the University of West Australia and gained 30 years of experience in fertility medicine and IVF.

Alaa was martyred in an attack on a Doctors without Borders vehicle as its team travelled to their office. The vehicle had coordinated the evacuation civilians south with occupation forces the previous day, only to be turned away from the checkpoint on the day of the strike.

Continued to work in the northern Gaza Strip until his martyrdom. He worked during the genocide to evacuate civilians and patients in cooperation with several international organizations. He was considered one of the pillars of the health sector in the northern Gaza Strip.
