Dr. Basel Mahdi and Dr. Ra'ed Mahdi were martyred as a result of a strike on their maternity hospital in Gaza City, to which they had been displaced with their families. Both doctors had been working from the beginning of the war until the day they were martyred. Those who were besieged in the hospital, including the two doctors and their family, had been pleading to be evacuated for several days.

He was martyred alongside his father, father-in-law and brother-in-law as a result of a strike of his in-laws' house, where he, his two children and his pregnant wife had fled. The house was bombed shortly after he arrived home after spending several consecutive days in al-Shifa hospital where he was working during the genocide, after refusing to evacuate from the north. He was one of few doctors who stayed in al-Shifa following the evacuate orders.

استشهد برفقة والده ووالد زوجته وصهره في إثر استهداف منزل أهل زوجته، حيث نزح هو وعائلته المكونة من زوجته الحامل وطفليه. تم استهداف المنزل خلال الفترة التي عاد خلالها الطبيب إلى المنزل بعد مكوثه لأيام متواصلة في مجمع الشفاء الطبي حيث كان يعمل خلال حرب الإبادة، وقد رفض النزوح من الشمال. كان الطبيب من القلة الذين مكثو في مستشفى الشفاء بعد التهديدات بالإخلاء.
